Environmental Stewardship

Explores environmental stewardship ethics, RBFF research findings, three behavioral tiers, steward characteristics matrix, and Leave No Trace waterway practices.

Stewardship is one of ACA’s three strategic pillars. Without clean water, maintained access, and low-impact behaviors, waterways will close. Instructors must embed stewardship into every course.

(Moral Obligation of Stewardship)Moral Obligation of Stewardship

Brief definition: “Informed, responsible action on behalf of the environment and future generations.” Stewardship implies personal responsibility and reverence for Earth.

Stewardship requires individuals to use resources wisely by placing self-imposed limits on consumption and altering personal habits to respect natural systems.

1. RBFF Key Research Conclusions

Based on research by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (2002), environmental education centers on three conclusions:

Conclusion 1

Knowledge is Not Enough

Ecological knowledge alone does not cause enduring behavior changes, but provides a basis for subsequent learning.

Conclusion 2

Ownership is Critical

Ownership (personal connection and investment in issues) is critical to responsible environmental behaviors.

Conclusion 3

Empowerment Fosters Change

Instruction fostering empowerment (sense of being able to resolve problems and investigate issues) enables lasting behavioral change.

2. Three Tiers of Stewardship Behavior

(Entry-Level)Entry Level

Includes environmental sensitivity and ecological knowledge. Provide foundational concepts for novices.

(Ownership Level)Ownership Level

Personalize environmental issues. Witnessing degradation of familiar waterways or investing personal effort creates profound ownership.

(Empowerment Level)Empowerment Level

Action skills, intention to act, and internal locus of control. Fosters ethics while paddling and extends them beyond paddling into daily life.

4. Waterway LNT (Field Example) & ACA Stewardship Pillars

(Waterway LNT)Waterway Leave No Trace (Practice Example)

Launch and land exclusively on durable surfaces to prevent bank erosion.
Pack out all trash, micro-plastics, and organic food remnants.
Respect river wildlife; maintain safe distances without disrupting habitats.
Clean craft thoroughly to stop aquatic invasive species transfer between rivers.

(ACA Stewardship Pillars)ACA National Stewardship Pillars

Activate grassroots support networks for local river conservation.
(Water Access)。Protect and expand public legal access to navigable waterways.
Support creation and promotion of nationwide watertrails.

Peer Social Cultivation of Environmental Sensitivity5.

Research shows environmental sensitivity develops through significant, positive contact with the outdoors over an extended period.

The social context of education is as vital as the methods. The paddling course social circle provides powerful reinforcement for stewardship values.

Stewardship is a long-term process requiring complementary educational efforts, working best when blending formal and non-formal learning settings.
