Unique Paddling Hazards
Water is an inherent hazard. Kayaks and canoes feature narrow hulls and high centers of gravity, making capsizing far more likely than in motorized craft. Safety requires assuming immersion is inevitable and wearing a PFD at all times without compromise.
Basic Safety Practices & Safety Attitude
Safety is an attitude. Prudent paddlers recognize hazards, assess risk, know limits, and exercise judgment. Follow these key practices:
Critical River & Water Hazards
Low-Head Dams
(Hydraulic Roller / Boil Line)。Low-head dams are virtually invisible from upstream. They generate violent circular hydraulics trapping paddlers and boats underwater.
Aerated water reduces buoyancy; paddlers sink even with lifejackets.
Maintain scouting vigilance and execute compulsory portage upstream.
Strainers and Sweepers
Fallen trees allow water passage while trapping solid objects. Water pressure pins swimmers beneath the surface.
(Foot Entrapment)。Never lower legs to prevent dangerous foot entrapment.
If unavoidable, swim aggressively toward the log and climb over top.
Whitewater
Flow over riverbed obstacles creates waves from mild to extreme. Increased velocity presents challenges requiring competent instruction.
Surf Zone
Coastal surf changes rapidly with powerful waves pushing craft toward rocks, piers, or shore. Requires significant skill before venturing out.
Remoteness
Inaccessible gorges or wilderness drastically reduce margin of error. Even minor miscalculations can have fatal consequences.
(Cold Water Shock & Layering)Four Phases of Cold Water Immersion & Protection
Water below 15°C (60°F) or combined air/water temp below 31°C (120°F Rule) poses hypothermia threats across four phases:

Layering System & Personal Protective Gear
Proper clothing delays hypothermia, extending survival time for self-rescue. Paddlers rely on a three-layer system:

River communication signals vary across organizations, and paddlers often have different habits from prior experience. Teams must align and confirm all signals during the pre-trip briefing before launching. The following protocols reference American Whitewater (AW) Universal River Signals as a practical example:河川通信シグナルは組織や個人の経験によって慣習が異なります。

Group Organization & Team Responsibilities
A well-trained and supportive group enhances the safety of every paddler. Members share collective and assigned duties:
Rescue Priorities: People, Boats, Gear
1. People
Swimmers in the water take top priority. Swimmers execute self-rescue or rolling immediately.
2. Boats
Retrieve boats only when swimmers are secure. Abandon swamped boats if they threaten human safety.
3. Equipment
Paddles and gear bags are recovered last after people and craft are fully secured.
General Group Responsibilities in All Rescues
When craft capsizes, all paddlers must evaluate and respond safely. Rescuers must never become victims themselves:
